Best Place To Ski in Korea |
1. Yongpyong Resort
Let’s start with Yongpyong Resort. While it’s not the largest ski resort in Korea, many will tell you it’s the best. Two of the resort’s ski slopes, Gold and Silver are among the best ski slopes you can find in Korea. If you’re a skier, you definitely want to check these slopes out.
Located at a range of 700 meters above sea level, Yongpyong Resort was founded in the mountainous region at the eastern edge of Gangwon-do near Gangneung City, about 200km from Seoul. With an annual snowfall average of 250cm, Yongpyong makes a perfect place for enjoying ski and other winter sports. The surrounding mountains also provide unparalleled views of wild nature which Gangwon-do is famous of.
Yongpyong Resort was the first modern resort facility of its kind in Korea when it was introduced in 1975. For over 30 years, the resort has been growing its reputation as one of the most sought-after ski resorts in Asia. Now the resort features 31 ski slopes, premium hotels and Erupean-style condominium along with 45-hole golf course. Its innovation over turning what could have been a typical ski resort to a city-like total facility has been a definitive benchmark model for other leisure facilities in Korea.
2. Deogyusan (Muju) Resort
Deogyusan Resort is the largest ski resort in Korea having a total area of 7 million square meters as its property. However, the combined length of the resort’s 30 ski slopes is about 5 kilometers shorter than Yongpyong Resort’s which has the longest combined ski slopes.
Deogyusan Resort is well known for its diverse ski slopes as they were made specifically for 1997 Winter Universiade. For this reason, while Yongpyeong Resort is most famous among the skilled and experienced skiers, Deogyusan Resort has been popular for beginners who could easily take the mild levels.
Besides the size of the area and the diversity in its slopes, another attractive feature of Deogyusan Resort is Deogyusan Mountain itself which has the highest slope in Korea you can ski down from the mountain’s peak. The mountain is not just for skiers however. As a part of a designated national park, Deogyusan Mountain is regularly visited by hikers from all around the country, making the resort popular over the whole year.
The resort is located in Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do near three the major cities of Korea; Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju. It takes about three hours from Seoul to get to Deogyusan Resort by bus or car. Although it’s farthest away from Seoul than any other ski resorts, Deogyusan Resort will give you a different experience that you won’t find in any other place.
3. Vivaldi Park Ski World
You probably have seen its extensive advertisement campaign in subway station or from billboards throughout Seoul.
Vivaldi Park quickly rose as Seoulites’ choice for a quick & dirty ski destination when it was opened in 1993. Relatively small with only 13 ski slopes, Vivaldi Park’s most attractive feature was not the size or the number of slopes the resort contains. Every winter, skiers from Seoul flock to Vivaldi Park for a quick drop-in skiing after a hard day at work. Some of them even come for a night ski before going to work in the morning. The most attractive reason to visit Vivaldi Park over other better facilitated and larger resort is its short distance from Seoul.
The resort features extensive accommodation options for daytime and nighttime skiing. As many of its customers come to the resort solely for skiing, Vivaldi Park’s facilities are focused towards skiers, even providing condos directly connected to the ski slopes.
Vivaldi Park also promises to provide the highest quality of snow on its slopes. The quality of the slopes has been praised by professionals and beginners alike. For this reason, many professional competitions and demonstrations have opened at Vivaldi Park.
4. Phoenix Park
Along with Yongpyong Resort, Phoenix Park is located within Pyeongchang-gun 700 meters above sea level. And like Yongpyong Resort, the quality of snow in Phoenix Park during the winter season is excellent. That’s why it was chosen as one of the venues for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games.
Containing 22 ski slopes within the resort property, Phoenix Park has been a great alternative for skiers whose skill isn’t keen enough to take on the relatively steeper slopes at Yongpyeong Resort. It also gained much attention from Koreans when after the resort was featured extensively in the popular drama ‘Winter Sonata’.
Out of 22 ski slopes the resort has, 12 of them meet the international standard including aerial and mogul. The most popular slope, dubbed as ‘Panorama Slope’, is an impressive 2.2km long course with an average width of 46 meters.
Besides the ski slopes, the resort also contains 9-hole golf club, 18-hole members only golf club, and an outdoor swimming pool. The accommodation options include main condo, the Euro Villa condo, and a youth hostel.
